Obamacare Did Increase Number of Insured In All States

affordable care act facts

Many Americans gained health insurance coverage under Obamacare at a decreased cost – but they’ve elected a president determined to take it away.

In a new study published by the Commonwealth Fund, Obamacare decreased – often significantly – the rates for health insurance across all 50 states. Nine states “experienced 10% to 13% reductions in the adult uninsured rate from 2013 to 2015,” according to the Commonwealth Fund report.

Some states including California, Kentucky, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington state and West Virginia cut their uninsured rate by 50%.

The same report also showed that in 38 states and Washington, D.C. the share of adults who reported not going to the doctor due to cost dropped by at least 2 percentage points since the Affordable Care Act went into effect.

In 16 states there were decreases in the percentage of people at risk for poor health outcomes who did not have a routine doctor’s visit, according to the report.

Kentucky is the state that reportedly benefited the most from Obamacare, with increases in health insurance coverage and decreases in the cost barriers to health care.

In 2013, Kentucky’s uninsured rate was 17%, which was also the national average. Two years later the uninsured rate was just 7%, a 10% drop due to the Affordable Healthcare Act. For low income adults in Kentucky, there was a 25 percentage point drop in the uninsured rate.

While residents of Kentucky seem to have benefited from Obamcare the most, 57.2% voted for Trump for president. Even though he promised to repeal Obamacare if elected.

“There is clearly a disconnect between people from benefiting from this particular program and their political viewpoints about what candidate they want to support,” said Dr. David Blumenthal president of the Commonwealth Fund. “I don’t have a degree in psychology, or sociology [but] I think this is really a perplexing point.”

While promising to repeal Obamacare, Trump vows to replace the healthcare initiative with something better. Although it is not clear what that healthcare plan will consist of. There is a disagreement among Republicans in Congress about what, if anything, should replace the Affordable Care Act.

How do you feel about Obamacare? Why do you think voters who benefited from the ACA not vote for a candidate who would protect it?
